Re: Question for Jerry and J.D.
Good idea on the heavy brackets. I trusted some Honda brackets and put a Yamaha Venture trunk on it. After 1000 miles Patty said "The trunk pad is falling." So we pull into the gas station by Barber Motorsports museum (B'ham AL) to take a look. One of the Honda brackets had sheered completely in two. The other side lacked 1/2 inch from braking off. Thank God for bungy cords and guardian angels. Twenty minutes earlier we were doing 70+ mph on the local highways. So don't skimp on those brackets.

OK, I finished making the brackets for my trunk and I think they will work out just fine. I still have to get them powder coated but you can see how I made them. I used 1"X1"X 1/8" angle iron and 3"X 1/8" flat stock.
Here are the brackets laid out
Just the rack temp mounted to the bike
The trunk in pretty close to final spot
A reference picture showing where my old backrest sat.

Looks good. Keep a close eye on those chromes pieces. Some manufacturers use cheap metal that will give, over time. Ours broke in the seams. Just check it for stress cracks after every hundred miles or so. Good job!

Re: Question for Jerry and J.D.
I got my trunk mounted today. Some guy named Joe came up with a neat way to mount these things, I guess I need to give him some credit. It is a little high, but once I get a new seat it should be ok.

Well, the more I look at this picture the more I don't like it. I think next weekend I will be lowering the trunk.

Yeah, I think if you shorten the mounts up a bit, it'll be perfect. I played around with mine for about an hour before I got them right.

Re: Question for Jerry and J.D.
I got my trunk brackets back from the powder coater and I got it installed. I'm very happy with how it turned out. I'm going to pull the trigger on some hard saddle bags once our tax return comes in and I think it will look even better after those are installed.

Ok I finally got around to posting a pic from after I cut the brackets down. The first is a before the second is after. I still left a little room for when I get an Ultimate seat(someday).

Joe, My cousin has the same trunk, he said the top rack rusted pretty quick. He recommended putting a clear coat on it.

I had heard that too. I was thinking of just letting it go until it rusts then getting it powder coated. We'll see.

Your trunk looks good JD. I was surprised how stable it was after mounting.

That was a heck of a way to mount it. It is rock solid. My father in law wants one, we are going to try and find him a silver one. I am sure I will be mounting it for him.jaarch wrote:Your trunk looks good JD. I was surprised how stable it was after mounting.
