Re: Prayer request update
Joan met with the Oncologist today. Not as good as we had hoped for but not as bad as it could have been. The cancer in each breast are two different kinds. One very slow and may have been there for a long time. Maybe years. The cancer in the other is very aggressive. One of the two has spread to the liver. Most likely the more aggressive one.
The first step is to shrink the cancer with chemo and then surgery to remove it. They are suggesting a double mastectomy. This may be three ot six months away. If the chemo does not get rid of the cancer in the liver, surgery will be required there also. The Oncologist said we will never completely get rid of the cancer but the way he talks it will be controlled.
Thanks for your prayers.

Re: Prayer request update
Spent most of two days at Johns Hopkins plus two days travel for a second openion. It was worth it. Joan had chemo this past Mon. She has been in bed going on three days now because of joint and bone pain. It should pass soon. She will be getting chemo every 21 days. She hopes to go back to work this coming Mon. The Dr's hope to do the surgery in about three months.

Re: Prayer request update
Bro.Wes,
Doing chemo prior to operating while Joan is strong is a good thing.
They use to operate, wait for recovery and then do chemo and radiation to treat what was left. By doing chemo and perhaps radaiation and higher strengths while Joan is strong, the doctors have a very good chance of killing it and at least preventing further matastization (Sp?). My Dad was one of the first to receive this protocol His was stage 5 at initial diagnosis. The Doctors told him to go home and get his affairs in order - He had 6 months at the most. No chance.
Thirteen years later he is coming to visit this weekend. The same GOD I prayed to in 1997 reigns today. I have seen more cured (and that is a lot) than I have seen pass.
Call if you want to talk. I can suggest a couple of books for you to look at.
Cancer is a hideous disease but it is not a death sentence.

Joan is at stage 4. The chemo is supposed to shrink the cancer making it easier to get it all. And if I understand it right, they will do the radiation thing after the surgery just in case they missed anything. This has been a real learning experiance for me. We have been blessed with a close family friend that is a nurse that is very involved.

Re: Prayer request update
Joan is, feeling better, up moving around a little, eating and drinking more. We are thankfull that nothing showed up on the MRI of the head and brain this week. The breast wound is looking a little better. She should be feeling pretty good by next week and then it will be time start all over again.
Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. It means a lot to us.

Re: Prayer request update
No surgery yet. My understanding is, the surgery will not be done untill the chemo has time to shrink the cancer down to make it easier to get all of it. At that time they will remove the whole brest. The wound I mentioned is where the cancer came to the surfice, looks purple, and oozing blood in some spots. It's nasty looking.marang wrote:trip wrote:Joan is, feeling better, up moving around a little, eating and drinking more.
